{"id":1600,"date":"2021-04-15T13:19:06","date_gmt":"2021-04-15T17:19:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/social-media\/?page_id=1600"},"modified":"2026-07-29T10:28:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T14:28:15","slug":"graphic-design-tips-for-social-media","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/social-media\/graphic-design-tips-for-social-media\/","title":{"rendered":"Graphic Design Tips for Social Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Below are some helpful tips and guidelines when designing for digital promotion.<\/h4>\n<h3>Tips<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Leave some space all around the edges, you don&#8217;t want copy* coming to the edge of the graphic &#8211; this makes it harder to read.<\/li>\n<li>When designing for digital, be sure to work in pixels<\/li>\n<li>Minimize the amount of copy you use in a post, short catchy headlines are best, use the caption for more details and send the viewer to a webpage for more information.<\/li>\n<li>A photo is always welcome and will usually stop a &#8220;scroller&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>*Copy is the text that appears on a designed piece, including flyers, webpages, posters, and other print or digital materials. You may also hear it referred to as \u201clanguage,\u201d \u201ccaption,\u201d and \u201cdescription.\u201d When working with the Marketing team, you&#8217;ll be asked to provide the copy first. The team may then recommend revisions before moving forward with the design.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Colors<\/h3>\n<p>Please use our approved brand colors, which you can find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/brand\/design-standards\/#s1\">here<\/a>. Please use the the HEX codes or RGB for web\/digital use. Maroon is Ramapo&#8217;s main color, please have that as the prominent color and the other colors like red, gold, gray and cool black as supporting.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Fonts\/Typography<\/h3>\n<p>For body copy, try to use sans serif fonts. Suggestions: Open Sauce One, Sarabun and\/or Arial.<\/p>\n<p>For a header use something a bit more bold like Action Condensed Bold, Bebas Neue, Impact or Oswald.<\/p>\n<p>To see samples and learn how to best use our typography, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/brand\/design-standards\/#s5\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Dimensions<\/h3>\n<p>Here are some of the most common platforms and their dimensions. Of course each platform has their own specific dimensions for event headers, profile images, and more &#8211; and they are quite happy to update dimensions with every app update. We try to Google periodically to stay in know!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instagram Story<\/strong>: 1080 x 1920 pixels (<em>Please try to leave 200 pixels at the top and bottom free of text or the important part of the image, some older phones will cut off the top and bottom of the graphic, you can still put color and\/or a design in that space and not leave it blank. See below for an example<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instagram Feed<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vertical \/ Tall (New Standard): 1080 x 1440 px (3:4 ratio) gives you maximum height and screen space.<\/li>\n<li>Portrait: 1080 x 1350 px (4:5 ratio) is the traditional long-standing vertical size.<\/li>\n<li>Square: 1080 x 1080 px (1:1 ratio) works best for centered or symmetrical graphics.<\/li>\n<li>Landscape: 1080 x 566 px (1.91:1 ratio) is used for horizontal photos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Facebook Feed<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Portrait (4:5 Ratio): 1080 \u00d7 1350 pixels is best because it takes up the most space on mobile screens.<\/li>\n<li>Square (1:1 Ratio): 1080 \u00d7 1080 pixels works well and looks neat on all devices.<\/li>\n<li>Landscape (1.91:1 Ratio): 1200 \u00d7 630 pixels is ideal for shared website links and desktop views.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>LinkedIn Feed<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimum size: 552 x 276 px<\/li>\n<li>Recommended width: 1080 px or higher<\/li>\n<li>Square image: 1080 x 1080 px<\/li>\n<li>Portrait image: 1080 x 1350 px (4:5 ratio) takes up the most vertical real estate in the mobile feed without getting cropped. It tends to outperform square posts on engagement.<\/li>\n<li>Multi-image posts: up to 20 images<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>X Feed<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Images: 1200 x 675 px (16:9)<br \/>\nSquare: 1080 x 1080 px (1:1)<br \/>\nVertical: 1080 x 1350 px (4:5)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Archway Event Photo<\/strong>: 640 x 350 pixels<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Examples<\/h3>\n<div class=\"accordions\">\n<div class=\"item\"><p class=\"question\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-plus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-minus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span> Instagram Story<\/p><div>\n<p>Notice the space at the top and bottom does not have anything important placed there, that we would not be upset if it was cut off on screen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/social-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/263\/2022\/08\/Apply-Now-IGStory1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2618\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/social-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/263\/2026\/07\/Scholarships-Available-25-26_Digital-IG-Story.jpg\" alt=\"An Instagram Story designed visual that has students featured in the center in different circles.
